Tommy: York City

I’ve been wanting to do a shoot with harsh lighting at a parking garage for a while now. Harsh lighting is usually used for portraits of males, as it can really create shadows to accentuate the jawline. These kinds of shadows tend to have a more dramatic, rougher feel, that most females usually don’t desire in their portraits. However, when photographers intentionally break this “rule” (for lack of a better word), the photograph can be very striking and intriguing. Anyways, I was really excited when Tommy texted me asking if I wanted to do a photo shoot. This was the perfect opportunity to experiment with harsh lighting and shadows, as I usually shoot with females. I decided we would go to a parking garage, as there are clean cut lines and often have areas that create interesting shadows. I pulled together a mood board from some pictures on Pinterest of the kind of shoot I was going for, and gave that to Tommy for some modeling direction. I feel that mood boards really bring together the concept for both the subject and photographer. Unfortunately, it was cloudy for most of the shoot, but the sun did peek through the clouds towards the end 😁.
