Comprehensive Editing

For the Comprehensive Editing assignment, students were given a document describing Utah’s Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Laws. Students were tasked with editing the document for light copy editing and editing for style, sentence structure, organization, visual design, and layout. The final revised document needed to address its rhetorical situation more effectively. I was to edit the document keeping in mind its target audience: students at Utah State.

My goal for the comprehensive edit was to make the document more appealing and memorable for college-age students. The initial document was a very bland piece of text with little to no style. In creating something that was geared towards college-age students, I used colorful gradients as a background for my document. Using a background that is not white, is sure to get attention. The document was also organized into bulleted lists to improve readability. This project showed me that a bland document addressing drug laws, could be made appealing and interesting to read with a few stylistic changes.
